At Home

We had a lazy day at home today--comfort foods-gingerbread, turkey pot pie with dumplings and doing projects-The Daddy played a new video game, The Mama sewed some Christmas ornaments, The Sister worked on her own sewing project, and The Baby wanted one too, so The Mama made one...

I'll edit in The Sister's project when she can show me where it is.
What The Mama made for The Baby...

Class At The Aquarium

Stella had her class at the aquarium in Baltimore today; the topic was animal adaptations. After the class, we went down to the big reef display and read about some animals and their adaptations.

Snuggles and Getting Outside

"Mama, come and see us, we're snuggling!"

I snuck away in the morning to work on our Advent activity calendar. Some days are as simple as unwrapping a special book to read (we use library books or our own collection of Christmas books), some are bigger activities like going to see a performance of The Nutcracker.

We went to check out a newish playground that we haven't test driven yet; some friends met us there.

Phenology Club

One of our regular nature club hikes is Phenology (the study of changes in nature over time) Club; each family has chosen a tree to follow through a year. We have hikes set up for the third Thursday of each month; Stella's young black walnut is devoid of leaves, so we spent time examining the bark closely. As usual, there were other adventures to be had--freeing the last of the milkweed seeds from their pods, discovering ice in the stream, the road, and in a birdbath...

Literacy Club and bedtime

Snaps from each end of our day:
This month's theme for Literacy Club was literacy and art; different families brought books about famous artists along with directions and materials for an art activity.

Shhhh...Cary fell asleep

Chesapeake Bay Field Trip--Mouth of The Susquehanna River

Earlier this autumn, we visited the source of one of the branches of the Susquehanna (at Lake Otsego in Cooperstown, NY). Today we visited the spot where the Susquehanna River empties in to the Chesapeake Bay at Havre de Grace, MD.
First, we stopped just north of Havre de Grace at Susquehanna State Park to admire the river and go for a walk. There is an old grist mill there with an enormous water wheel and a walk along the old railroad tracks. The girls collected some little clam shells and other big shells, not quite sure what they are. We saw and heard bald eagles from afar, a kingfisher, 2 types of woodpeckers-downy and red bellied, a heron, a mallard duck, another little water bird, a seagull, crows, wrens, tufted titmouse, and chickadees!

For more information on Susquehanna State Park follow the hyperlink.

We drove on to Havre de Grace to the Concord Point lighthouse, the northernmost Chesapeake Bay lighthouse.
